Need to compress and decrease SWF file size in Flash CS6? Here are som hands on tips to compress swf, optimize & decrease SWF file size in Flash CS6:

Flash compress swf! How to optimize & decrease swf file size in Flash CS6! Simple steps:

  1. To find out the byte size of all images and fonts, open your .fla file in Flash CS6 and go to File > Publish settings and check Publish > SWF and check the option “generate size report” found under tab ADVANCED. Then click publish. This will get you a full byte size report on every element, revealing the largest ones!

  2. Always save images from Photoshop with File > Save for web. If your swf-file is to heavy, try to optimize,  compress and deacrease image size by lowering the quality options on all jpg images with File > Save for web. You can see the bytesize changing in the left bottom corner. A JPG weighs less than a PNG.How to Flash compress swf! How to optimize & decrease size in Flash CS6!
  3. You can also decrease, optimize and compress images by right clicking on them inside the library in Flash CS6. Go to the image properties and try to optimize, decrease and compress image size without losing quality by checking “custom” and changing the number as below:

  4. Avoid embedding fonts since this will increase byte size. Optimize, compress and decrease file size by converting all fonts into vector shapes. Only do this when your text is final since you can’t type after the fact. Select your text by marking it, go to “modify > Break apart”. This will break apart the letters from eachother. Then go to “modify > Break apart” once again to convert all letters into vector shapes.
  5. Only animate movieclips and use bitmaps exclusively for static elements such as a background. Always put your bitmap inside a movieclip and then animate it.
  6. Try to reuse as many assets as possible. For example if you are creating bubbles, create one single png/jpg bubble as a movieclip and then reuse it in different sizes, speed and colors for example. You can put multiple single bubbles movieclips inside a new movieclip to create a bubbling effect.
  7. Add effects inside of Flash CS6 instead of using multiple png/jpg bitmaps. Reuse your assets by adding effects to the bitmaps you already have in the Flash library. Put them inside a moviecip and change the color hue, blur, alpha and so on… Maybe you don’t need that extra bitmap!?
  8. Position every bitmap, text and movieclip on even pixels inside the stage in Flash CS6. To do this click on the element inside the stage and look in the properties panel > position and size. Change the X: and Y: position to whole numbers, for example 40,86 to 41 and so on. This will help your swf look a little sharper 🙂
  9. Also get sharper images by right clicking on the bitmaps in the library > properties and check “Allow smoothing”.

The above steps should compress, optimize & decrease SWF-file size significantly in Flash  CS6! Good luck!
