What is communication design?

Communication design is basically what media you use to communicate your message. In addition to your website, your communication to customers can also be printed, hosted live events, presentations, activities in social media channels etc. The purpose of communication design is to attract, inspire, create desires and motivate people to engage and get involved in your brand and service helping business grow!

 

 

How to create good communication design?

This article assumes you already have a website. The purpose of communication design is to attract, inspire, create desires and motivate people to engage and get involved. This is how to create good communication design on the web:

  • The first step is to determine the brand identity. Choosing the wrong media channels can actually hurt your brand, while choosing the right media channels in a smart way will enhance your brand. What purpose, feelings and desires would you like your brand to represent?
  • The second step is to find out where your target audience is located mediawise. For example, if they use Twitter and Facebook a lot, that is where you need to be! Other media channels might be a waste of time!?
  • Who are your competitors? How are they communicating their brand? Can you learn from them? Is there any way to be even more effective to get your message out there?
  • Identify in what possible ways you could get in contact, engage and involve your target audience? Examples might be flyers/posters, a festival, a game, a radio/tv show, a live presentation, a contest, online activities and so on…
  • Online / digital communication might be creating an app / game, a forum, ratings, using twitter, facebook, youtube, instagram, pinterest, linked in, interactive ads, online surveys / contests, a blogg or podcasts, videos etc.
  • Always consider the purpose of using any perticular media channel. How can you get the most benefit from it? Or is a certain media channel even a poor choice for your brand?
  • Is your target audience using any particular app to take advantage of or place ads in?
  • Always encourage and make it easy for your users to respond and engage in your brand / website. You want them to get caught up, be active, return often and spread the word.
  • Try to create some kind of communication with your users making them feel like a part of your brand. A blogg is an easy way, but other more creative methods might be more powerfull and interesting…
  • Sometimes you need to try out many different communication methods to find the right ones for your brand, that’s OK!
  • Don’t forgett to mesure cost / gain to localize the best communication channels possible for your brand.

It is impossible to have a meaningful online communication through all social media channels at once, and it is probably better to do a real good job in one single media channel than a poor job in three different ones… But which media channels are right for your brand? Here is a starting point:

  • Where are your target audience?
  • Where are your competition / competitors? (should you follow their lead or do your own thing?)
  • Are there any yet untried methods or upcoming opportunities?
  • How many channels can you update constantly having a high standard content?
