If you are getting a 404 error when trying to view your sitemap created by Yoast WordPress SEO plugin, try one or more of these solutions:

  1. Basically, if you don’t have any content (pages, posts, tags or categories), this will cost an error since there is nothing to index! Good to know.
  2. Try to deactivate the plugin “WordPress SEO by Yoast”, delete it, download and reactiviate it again to see if this resolves the error problem.
  3. Try to deactivate your other plugins one by one to see if they are causing the error. W3 Total Cache may be the reson as an example.
  4. In your WordPress admin, go to SEO > XML sitemaps and uncheck the box “” and then save. Re-check the box again, and hit save once again. Check if the sitemap xml is working.

  6. If your sitemap still doesn’t work, add the following code to your .htaccess file to fix the problem:

If all your sitemaps created by “WordPress SEO by Yoast plugin” are working except for post_tag-sitemap.xml or category-sitemap.xml, try this solution:

  1. Make sure you have at least one post using at least one of the tags / categories created. If no posts are using any tags or categories, there is nothing to display = error.
  2. If you are not even using tags on your website… (or categories)
